Scientist Working in Laboratory

The Full Story

Hello,

My name is Makayla Jiminez, and I am currently an undergraduate student at the University of Alberta pursuing a degree in Science, as well as a Certificate in Sustainability. With a major in Biology and a minor in Chemistry, my passion for science has always been at the intersection of the two, particularly where biological systems and processes can be applied to complex chemical problems to improve efficiency. Studying microbial metabolism alongside green chemistry inspired me to research further into preexisting biology that mirrored industrial chemical processing. From this research, driven purely by my love for science and my personal interest in green chemistry, I found that this is an emerging area of study that deserves more attention to reduce future environmental harm and mediate existing pollution. I was surprised at how many biological systems could serve as more efficient alternatives (given further research efforts), and felt it was important to share with my University of Alberta community to hopefully inspire others towards sustainable development and innovation.

If there is one thing that I want to impress with Microbes at Work - Green Applications, it would be the growing necessity to look towards already functioning natural systems, where possible, to address both future progress and innovation within global industry, as well as alternatives to synthetic chemicals with associated environmental harm.

We have one Earth! Let's take care of it!

Thank you for reading,

Makayla Jiminez
